Alright lets get to the chase. How did you come up with the concept of the “Mamba”?

Well the Mamba was developed with a few thoughts in mind, I saw some concept sketches for some Jaguars then my creativeness just went off of that and tried to blend some modern ideas into it. Clean surfaces with hard edges was the main goal with it. The Mazda RX8 was a lot a bit of inspiration, I really like how the fenders on that car swoop up in the front.

You said this concept had to grow on you. So how long did it take to grow and how high on the charts?

With any concept car it is designed to grab your attention, either in a bad way or a good way. It makes you take another look to see what is going on. For some people it just jumps out at you. It is one of those designs that I created and almost forgot about. Then I dug through the unfinished projects and gave it another go. It started to shape up with each detail. I shared it on Renderosity and got lots of critiques and even a new name. I can’t even remember what I called it. But Mamba was a perfect choice, it makes that snake like shape come to life with that name attached to it.

Over on Deviantart.com I got allot of attention and so many comments I really didn’t know how to respond to it all. But I still look at the car and find areas I can improve it.

Is it more difficult to model a concept or an existing design?

I have done some mustangs in the past but that was when I was learning how to use Rhino3D. I found it a good means to learn form and proportions. I even tried my hands at a Lamborghini and found it just as difficult to create something fresh. But the main motivation for me to model anything is to try something with my own touch. I can’t just look at cars without dissecting them and thinking how I would do it differently.

Please tell us about how you modeled the car?

With most of my concepts I find a goal or mission. I’ll see something that inspires me and I will go at it from my angle. I’ll start drawing the nurbs curves and setting up circles for the wheel locations and set my wheel base and then start placing my main feature lines. At this point I should have some idea what I plan to do with the wheel arches and fenders. From there it grows with the details applied and then I start placing the interior parts and trying different wheel styles to bring out the best in the design.

What about the Materials used?

I’ve been using 3dstudio Max with Brazil and with my current move to a new job I have no longer access to this program but I’ve been testing Vray for Rhino and find it comparable and will have to get that very soon. The Materials on the Mamba were a brazil car paint and the background had a ground plain with a matte shadow with a basic gradient set to the background. I also used brazil Chrome and glass.

What kind of Lights were used in your scene?

It was lit with a brazil GI system and a light source set behind the model, it was probably a omni light. Its been sometime since I have looked at the file.

How about Rendering and Post Production.

There wasn’t any post production. Brazil and 3dStudio Max is a great tool to get the look your after.

Did you come across any major problems with the scene?

Not really I keep it simple on these things something I use HDRI sometimes not. I spend the most time adjusting the paint materials and placing a white card above the car to get a good reflection.

How many hours did you spend on the entire scene.

I would have to say after the importing the mesh model from rhino and applying all of the materials it could take a few hours to get the idea across. I might find areas lacking and need some more detail so I might go into Rhino and fix and edit some more so around a week to get this in between projects. But I figure the full project took me around 6 months to finish. Probably around 40-60hrs of playing with it between projects.

Do you have any favorite cg artists?

A good friend Sabino Leerentveld has to be on the top of my list as he and I have learned allot from each other. I look to Artists/Designers like Phil Frank the designer of the Saleen S7 or Harald Belker the guy behind some super cool cars in movies like Minority report. Looking at these guys work and many others will always inspire me.

Do you have in words for beginners to cg?

All I can say is fall in love with what your doing and you will have no limits. There are steps to learning and like a baby we all need to learn how to talk and walk. I believe most of what I have learned is from other people on the internet, take criticism and use it to guide yourself but don’t let it get you down. There is always another model to explore. I will never stop learning.
